T
he City of Colorado Springs has an online representative that’s helping folks reserve their favorite city parks or pay parking tickets. Connie is the CodeBaby Character whose interactive conversations guide you through the City of Colorado Springs’ website. This well-spoken avatar helps guide you to popular departments, where you no longer need to pick up the phone. Instead with the click of a mouse, you can find the closest public transportation, report graffiti or a wildlife problem, or even request road maintenance in your neighborhood.
We took to the streets of Colorado Springs to see what people were saying about their online experiences on the City’s site:
“I wanted to report a code violation, specifically, a bunch of overgrown weeds. Connie’s first set of options included code violations, so I was able to click right to what I needed instead of searching through the otherwise difficult to navigate Springs’ website. And, actually, Connie found the code violation phone number for me,” Tim, Colorado Springs resident.
Tim continued, “I found Connie incredibly useful, not only because she had exactly what I needed in an easy-to-navigate format, but also because, even on a usually-slow laptop, the program seemed to run perfectly fine without slowing down my computer at all.”
Another Colorado Springs resident, Audrey, used the CodeBaby Conversation to direct her to Mountain Metro Transit routes. “I had never taken the bus before so I went to the city site to find more information. The avatar greets you, and one of the options is public transit, so I clicked it. Then it shows all the bus routes. She gives you the option of a route explanation, so I chose to have her explanation, which was useful for the start and end times. I then used the trip planner to find the right route.”
Cindy, Colorado Springs resident, shared her experience about paying a parking ticket, “Since I had never seen a character like this before, I was kind of intrigued. It was unique. However, since the parking meter was broken at the time of the ticket, it has ended up being an issue that’s needed to be taken care of in person.”
Initial reports show the CodeBaby Conversations have significantly decreased call volume. With an average of 1,487 avoided calls per month to the City’s staff, this is adding up to considerable savings for the City.
